Knowledge translation and exchange project creates digestible research infographics
Knowledge Exchange on Reader Boards (KERB) is a new project that shares research done by and at BCMHSUS through easy-to-understand infographics. It takes key messages from research and breaks them down, making them easy to understand.
"This project is about sharing knowledge to advance a culture of learning and innovation," says Clayon Hamilton, knowledge exchange lead. Hamilton is also leading the KERB project. "It brings together diverse partners to collaborate on optimizing how we communicate key findings from relevant mental health and substance use research."
KERB is a collaboration between various partners to raise awareness and interest about research, involving BCMHSUS researchers, clinicians, clients, and leaders. It does this through activities like putting infographics, like those below, on large TV monitors called Reader Boards at sites like the Red Fish Healing Centre, and a bulletin board at Heartwood Centre for Women. Plans are also in motion to use a similar approach at Forensic Psychiatric Hospital.

The current project team includes three patient partners, a director of inter-professional practice, an advisor of patient experience and community engagement, and a knowledge exchange lead. So far, two infographics have been produced from work involving Dr. Christian Schutz.
The project team members with lived experiences of mental health and/or substance use issues are helping to create infographics in a way that is suitable for clients. The initial roll-out of KERB is part of a larger plan at BCMHSUS to find innovative ways to communicate research in plain language across BCMHSUS clinical areas and sites. In particular, we will share:
- Recently published research,
- Ongoing research, and
- Research-related activities co-designed with patients as partners.
